PAFFREL Organization, a people’s movement formed in 1987 combining with several civil society organizations, is an independent organization that became the first and foremost establishment to introduce a novel process of election observation.
In accordance to the mission set out by PAFFREL, having independently and impartially observed all the elections in Sri Lanka from the Presidential Election in 1988, it has gained the expertise in that subject. In addition, PAFFREL Organization being a member of the Asia Network for Free Elections (ANFREL), has provided it’s expertise for the election observations in the other Asian Countries.
More than 20,000 volunteers, representing the various civil society organizations widespread throughout the country engage in the activities along with PAFFREL. In the Election monitoring process, PAFFREL, which has been acclaimed by the general public and political parties in many occasions for its impartial observations, has been recognized by the Commissioner of Elections since 2004.
PAFFREL Organization comprised of nationally formed organizational network and voluntary activists in the all island are a non-profitable organization aimed at strengthening and expanding the democracy all over the country. Parallel to this, PAFFREL implements programmes aimed at promoting the political values in our country. PAFFREL, in collaboration with the Democratic and Human Rights Organizations in every district in the country, is engaged of forming citizens’ committees that work towards political awareness, protecting and preserving of voting rights, promoting the citizenry participation at elections and promoting for the transparency and accountability in the governance.
PAFFREL has been discharging it’s maximum energy to comply the above mentioned gigantic tasks with the co-ordination of community based civil organization network that includes of the Movement for Free and Fair Elections (MFFE), the Sarvodaya Shramadana Movement, the National SEDEC, the Conference of Major Religious Superiors, National Conference on Religion and Peace (NCRP), Marga Institute, Conference of All Ceylon Young Men’s Muslim Associations, Centre for Society and Religion, National Peace Council, Community Education Centre and Several others of similar inclination.
PAFFREL has been registered under the Company Registrar, and it has further been registered as a Local Non-governmental Organization in the National Secretariat for the Non-governmental organizations under the Ministry of Social Services and Social Welfare. PAFFREL is governed by a Board of Directors that consists of the representatives of the major civil organizations and the intellectuals in Sri Lanka.
